The Kilt...

Here's what I have been working on this past week. The Kilt (formerly The Crooked Kilt) is opening another Irish Pub in San Luis Obispo. This is their logo, that I cut, painted and stacked together. There is so much involved in this logo. Design over design over design, so many steps before I could even letter the name. Every part of this sign made me insane, I thought it would never be finished, and then it was just done. Funny how that happens. This logo is nearly 10 feet wide and tall, I had to stand on the roof of my truck to take this photo, and I still couldn't get it all in. Next week, I get to figure out how to hang this sign 15 feet up on a wall??? The month of April is totally devoted to this Pub, there are so many murals, tables, mirrors and a little bit of everything else, to be lettered. I hope I can get it all in.

My Friday night traffic...

Every time I go down south to the LA area, I run straight into a traffic jam. It doesn't matter what day or time, there is always a slow stretch. Now just because I live on the Central Coast, that doesn't mean that we don't also have our traffic issues. Tonight the commute traffic slowed up a bit. That's my wife in front of me, cutting lanes on her Vespa. Man I love our roads...

The 35' Roars back to life, after 70+ years ....

Just over a year ago, I sold this 35' Ford Coupe to my friend Ken Harris. I needed money to fund my 50' Suburban, so the Ford had to go down the road (but to a good friend). This car was a 9,000 original mile 35' purchased new in San Francisco, and parked after the war (WWII) in the Lake Tahoe area for over 70 years. When I first got the car, we brought the flathead back to life and it ran great, but the years of sitting meant that everything else would have to be gone through. The car went on to Ken, and Ken wasted no time getting the car apart, re-built, and back together (all while building a 29' Ford roadster, and working a 40+ hour day job). He pulled out the flathead and swapped in a 64' Corvette 327 with a manual trans. Rebuilt all of the running gear, and had it back on the road in a years time, just this last week. He has the car fenderless right now (race style) but plans to run the fenders / running boards soon. Personally, I think it will look better with fenders, but it is growing on me fenderless. Ken says the coupe is fast and only wants to go faster, but he will wait to feel the car out before pushing it.

The first picture is the car leaving my house just over a year ago, the other pictures are the car today...

Here is Ken, and the 35', he looks happy to be finished....

Fess Parker...

TV's Davy Crockett (Fess Parker) passed away today at 85...

Long long trailer...

Long Long vintage trailer for sale (cheap) on the side of the road in Templeton. There is a hand written note taped on to the back that says, "please don't tow, I am trying to find someone to move it for me." Killer trailer, needs some work (replace the dented panels, strip the house paint, that even covers the marker lights). The inside is very clean and insanely big. If I had a place to put this beast, I would. If I was single, I would rent a space, and move in. Bitchin'!

Skateboard doll-up...

At the Born Free show this last summer Mike Davis gave the boy's a couple of decks. My friend Mike's son Ethan wanted me to paint something on his deck. Well today we were down in Orange Co. and I gave Ethan his board... He liked it.

Another one...

I'm always so bummed when a business that I did the logo and design work for closes. It's nice to have a visual portfolio downtown, to show people. I liked the way this logo came out, and the pictures don't even capture the brilliance of the silver leaf (at night, it glowed). This Aveda salon was booming, and then one day it was empty. Another one down to the economy. Sad to see...
*It turns out that about an hour after I snapped these pictures, some guy scraped the windows clean, and the sign was removed. Glad I got the pics!

Strength Through Joy...

Blogging, a waste of time?

Do people even look at your Blog? That is something that I always question myself about. The counter, and the comments left, let you know that people are looking... But are they really seeing what you are putting out there. Well about two months ago, I received a email from the art director at Nike Skateboarding. He wanted some hand lettered scripts for t-shirt designs. When I asked him how he found me, he said on my blog. This blew me away, people do see, and it's getting around, makes you feel good. Had a great experience working with Nike SB, and without this blog, it would have never happened.
